Farewell to Janet Lockhart (1947-2026)
The City of Dublin is mourning the passing of former Mayor Janet Lockhart, a dedicated leader whose vision and service helped shape the community for generations to come.
Janet was elected to the Dublin City Council in 1996 and served as a Councilmember from 1997 to 2001. She was appointed Mayor in 2001 and later elected to the position, serving through 2007 for a combined total of 11 years in public office.
During her tenure, Dublin experienced significant growth and development, including projects such as Hacienda Crossings, the West Dublin–Pleasanton BART Station, the Dublin Ranch development, and the opening of the Dublin Senior Center. Her leadership helped guide Dublin’s transformation into the vibrant and thriving community it is today.
One of Janet’s lasting legacies was her commitment to preserving Dublin’s history. She championed the preservation of the historic sites now known as Heritage Park, including the Kolb House, Green Store, St. Raymond’s Church, cemetery, and historic barns. These treasured landmarks continue to honor Dublin’s heritage for future generations.
Mayor Janet Lockhart worked closely with fellow City Councilmember Claudia McCormick on the effort to preserve Dublin’s history. Together with their husbands, Steve and Tom, they helped lead the Dublin Preservation and Heritage Association — later became the Dublin Historical Society — and played an instrumental role in the creation of Heritage Park.
Janet was also a strong supporter of community initiatives, including the School of Imagination project serving children with special needs. She was known for her collaborative leadership style, dedication to public service, and commitment to strengthening partnerships throughout the community.
Janet Lockhart’s legacy of leadership, preservation, and community service will continue to inspire and be remembered throughout Dublin for years to come.
